King’s College, Cambridge: political ructions

This made my day. Absolutely hilarious.
Firstly, this:
Dear all,
I am writing to you concerning the general election campaign in Cambridge. I hope this is not inappropriate, but this list seems to get the best way to get in touch with everyone.
I am currently helping to campaign for the Conservatives in Cambridge and I am writing to [...]

Leftist condescension

A good article in the Washington Post analyzes left-wing condescension towards conservatives. To summarize the main aspects of the condescension:

Conservatives are part of a vast conspiracy seeking ends other than what they proclaim.
Conservatives are stupid and ill-informed.
Conservatives are racist and bigoted.
Conservatives are driven by emotion and anxiety rather than by reason.

Shauna Wilton and the heavy burden of Thomas the Tank Engine’s oppressive patriarchy

Thank goodness we have academics who can produce this kind of insightful analysis:
If you thought the television tales about Thomas the Tank Engine were merely light-hearted fun, think again.

In fact, they portray a world blighted by a ‘conservative political ideology’ and a rigid class system which stifles self-expression. And they are sexist.
That, at least, is [...]

Political Compass

Political Compass is supposed to help you to find your position on the ideological spectrum. The quiz takes the form of a list of statements with which you can agree or disagree. The problem is that many of these statements already acknowledge a left-wing worldview.
For example:
“If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity [...]

Effects of women’s suffrage

John Derbyshire considers the effects of granting women the vote. Apparently women used to favour Republicans up until about 1964.   If I recall correctly, in the UK female voters were more likely to vote Conservative than men were up until 1997.

Attacking your friends & Hotelling models

I sometimes get the impression that the party has lost all faith in being able to convince any voter of anything
Dizzy takes the view that Cameron can show his might versus his own party (again…. remember his and Osborne’s attacks on libertarians within the party) by supporting all-woman shortlists.
I am not convinced that Cameron shows [...]

The ’sophisticated’ American Left.

In case you missed the story, Glenn Beck reported that White House Communication Director Anita Dunn cited Mao Tse-Tung as one of her biggest influences in a speech. Don’t take my word for it. Watch:

She claims, and Christian Science Monitor takes her word for it, that her comments were obviously “ironic”. Watch the speech [...]

Questions, questions…

Last night I represented the Bow Group on a “Question Time” style panel at an event organized by Cambridge University Conservative Association and Conservative Future. It was all good fun and the CUCA people fired some good questions at us in a typically smart and enthusiastic manner. I made a prediction of a Conservative [...]

Newsflash to UK Conservatives: Obama isn’t cool anymore.

Email from Tory HQ:
A few weeks ago, I asked you and your fellow newsletter readers to send in ideas for Conservative T-shirts – and the response has been overwhelming.
We got nearly a thousand entries in total, ranging from the totally bizarre to the totally brilliant. There were some pro-Conservative suggestions, some anti-Labour ones, and some [...]
