David Thompson points out some of his old posts on topics of conformity in art, racism and feminism. Nice flowchart guide to the politics of “offensive” statements in US politics from the Pillage Idiot. Click to enlarge. As Mark Steyn comments: What kind of so-called political party is based on an idea of indigenous people? American Pravda The New York Times picks up the tired idea that opposition to Obama is racist and runs with it in an op-ed by some guy called Bob Herbert who basically recites a bunch of nasty things some people you’ve never heard of have said about Obama, including I kid you not, a quote [...] Jonah Goldberg has an article today on Democrat claims that all opposition to “the one” is racist. But others just won’t let go. Maureen Dowd of the New York Times hears Rep. Joe Wilson shout, “You lie!” And her instinctive response is: “Fair or not, what I heard was an unspoken word in the air: You [...] I can’t stand the phrase “people of color”. It isn’t just the implied unworthiness of everyone who isn’t “of color”. It’s not even the spelling color/colour that gets me. Mainly it’s the mealy mouthed non-English way of saying things. Commentary in the UK about US politics is usually not of a very high standard. Usually it consists of people with the intellectual wherewithal of a tortilla, such as Michael Tomasky at the Guardian, copying stories wholesale from the left and centre left of the US media. Lest we forget where identity politics can take us, I reprint in its entirety this article from Asian Week from a couple of years ago. If it doesn’t make you angry or incredulous then there is something wrong with you. I’m posting over at Sociology Lens today on how the three things in the title are related to one another. A few interesting links related to the Gates-Obama-Crowley affair. |
